The Boy Who Grew A Forest
by Sophia Gholz, illustrated by Kayla Harren
As a boy, Jadav Payeng was distressed by the destruction deforestation and erosion was causing on his island home in India’s Brahmaputra River. So he began planting trees. What began as a small thicket of bamboo, grew over the years into 1,300 acre forest filled with native plants and animals. The Boy Who Grew a Forest tells the inspiring true story of Payeng–and reminds us all of the difference a single person with a big idea can make.

Melea’s Review

“A true story about Jadav Peyeng, a Mishing tribesman (India), whose life demonstrates the importance of a person’s responsibility, and their patience, care, and hard work. There’s much to learn from this book about starting small and changing things in big ways – like how changing the physical course of a river can provide food for God’s creation, help animals survive, and move forward the re-building of a whole forest. Mr. Peyeng is a hero! At a time when we don’t always see and listen to our young people – here’s one worthy of our applause for his brilliance and resourcefulness. His story inspired my story.”
